Alpha Coffee's Top Five Favorite Fall Hikes

Fall is the ideal time to hit the trails in the Wasatch, especially after a La Niña Summer. The changing leaves and cooler temperatures make it one of the best seasons for hiking. Whether you're looking for a quick escape or a more challenging adventure, we've rounded up five of our favorite hikes in the Wasatch that are perfect for enjoying the beauty of the season.

If you’re looking for something on the easier side the Lake Solitude Trail in Big Cottonwood Canyon is the perfect choice. This 3-mile hike starts near Brighton Resort where you’ll do a quick stroll past Silver Lake before starting your journey. The Lake Solitude hike is especially scenic in the fall when the Aspens start to change colors. It’s a striking contrast to the evergreens beyond. Keep an eye out for moose and deer!

As a trail sponsored by Alpha Coffee through the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, the hike to Lake Mary is one we’re especially proud of. Also located near Brighton Resort, the Lake Mary Trail is a 2.5-mile round trip of medium difficulty. While this hike is a bit steep to start, you’ll be rewarded by the stunning views of the lake at the top.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the trail continues to Lake Martha and even further to Lake Catherine, adding extra elevation and more incredible views.

The Willow Lake Trail is considered a generally easy route. This hidden gem, tucked away in Big Cottonwood Canyon is a 2.5-mile loop trail shaped like a figure eight. The hike is known for its abundance of aspen trees including a whole grove you’ll pass on your way to the lake – a must see in the fall. Wildlife sightings are common here too— moose are often seen near the lake during the cooler months of the year.

Nestled in the Lone Peak Wilderness, the Red Pine Lake Trail is an awesome 7.7-mile round trip that rewards hikers with spectacular views, especially in the fall. While this hike is on the harder side, the trail is pretty well packed out and easy to follow. You might encounter early snow, which can make the trail more challenging but also adds a unique charm to the landscape. As you make your way up, you'll be surrounded by vibrant fall foliage, and the rugged Wasatch mountains. The trail culminates at Red Pine Lake, arguably one of the prettiest lakes in Utah. For a little extra adventure, consider taking a quick side trip to Gloria Falls, just a short detour from the main trail. Keep an eye out for Mountain Goats on this trail!

The area around Red Pine Lake is popular for camping, consider making a couple days out of the excursion! Remember, it’s important to follow Leave No Trace Principles and check for any specific regulations or guidelines regarding camping in the area. The Millcreek Pipeline Trail offers beautiful views and a relatively easy trek. While it’s quite a lengthy trail at 13 miles, the route is out and back, meaning you can make the hike as long or as short as you want. Enjoy an array of colors as the leaves change and open vista views of the valley below. What makes this trail extra special? You can bring your furry companions! Dogs are allowed on this trail and on odd-numbered days they’re even allowed off leash! Just make sure to keep them away from watershed areas.
